There’s been an observable rise in the number of autoimmune disease cases reported each year. This trend is due, in part, to the identification of new types of autoimmune diseases and the improved ability to correctly diagnose them. At present, there are as many as 100 different autoimmune diseases or disorders acknowledged by medical science. Among the most well-known are Hashimoto’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), and Grave’s Disease. Here at BodyPro Wellness Center, we’re dedicated to identifying the triggers for these conditions, and resolving and/or taming autoimmune diseases for patients in and around Newport Beach, and throughout Orange County, CA.
Understanding Autoimmune Diseases and How We Can Help
There’s been a long-standing belief that managing the symptoms is the only successful approach to an autoimmune disease. This belief is grounded in the idea that the only thing we can do is wait until medical science identifies a cure for the condition. Dr. Tony Ganem, DC, and his team know there is a smarter, more proactive way of addressing these concerns through deep lab testing and a process known as functional medicine.
Functional medicine is a refocused form of medicine. The foundational principle of functional medicine is that we should be focused on making the body function, optimally, and not just on treating diseases. So, Functional medicine focuses on helping the body heal itself by identifying things that are triggering the body to not work well; removing them; and simultaneously maximizing the body’s abilities to work towards reversing the disease process. This process isn’t well-known, in part, due to the differing approaches taken by conventional medicine and functional medicine. As mentioned previously, there has been a long-standing practice of treating the symptoms of autoimmune disorders rather than the underlying condition.
While managing the symptoms is an essential part of improving the patient experience, that doesn’t do anything to address the actual problem. Functional medicine treats the symptoms as well, but it’s only a step in the process. The first treatment step is the most crucial step of all. What’s actually causing the underlying concern? Autoimmune diseases do not occur in a vacuum, and the natural function of our immune system is to protect us, not attack us. So what went wrong?
Our process begins with the goal of determining what caused this abnormal state of hyper or over-aggressive immunity. If that issue can be addressed, the body’s overall function can be improved, the illness eased or eliminated, and its symptoms with it. Frequent triggers include infections, chemicals, foods; and often we used labs such as Cyrex Immune Reactive Labs to determine what may be at the root of your overactive immune system
The most commonly recognized autoimmune diseases include the following:
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – With this condition, myelin is attacked by our own immune systems. This protective covering for the nerves will develop scar tissue, which can interfere with the transmission of messages to the spinal cord and brain.
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) – The lining of the joints are attacked, resulting in joint deformity and painful swelling. It’s possible for this condition to also damage the eyes, lungs, skin, heart, and blood vessels.
- Hashimoto’s Disease – This is an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid, producing a state known as hypothyroidism. This condition can interrupt the production of hormones.
These are just three of the most commonly encountered autoimmune diseases and are among the many that are treated at BodyPro Wellness Center.
